Healthy Ecological Architecture

Research in to the rethinking the industrial city centers of the 21st century from a holistic environmental, ecologicial, toxicological, economic, sociological, political & spiritual perspective. I personally am approaching the problem from an ecological as well as a toxicological - public health and occupational health perspective.

Susan Ustin - remote sensing imagery

Susan Ustin: "Imaging Spectrometry " - Susan Ustin
Professor of Resource Science, Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources, UC Davis

Her research has focused on developing and testing methods for retrieving environmental information from remote sensing imagery. The work has been conducted at spatial scales from microscopic to regional (e.g., watershed) studies. The goal has been to develop a fundamental understanding of processes based on physical principles that utilize the full information content of the data rather than an empirical focus on the visual or pictorial patterns. Dr. Ustin has studied many different ecological communities and farmlands in the US and abroad, including boreal and temperate forests, semi-arid shrublands, and grasslands. Her environmental research includes both basic and applied research directions and has been funded by NASA, EPA, DOE, USDA, other federal and state agencies, and private corporations. She has authored more than 80 reviewed scientific papers and 80 proceedings papers, developing innovative techniques to extract environmental information from the remotely sensed image data.

Urban Living - The Green Gate from NRDC

Bay Area population increased by 12.6 percent from 1990 to 2000.

Sprawl threatens half a million acres of the Bay Area's open space and agricultural land.

The amount of garbage Bay Area residents generate is increasing: on average, each resident generated almost two pounds of garbage per day in 1999, while the average employee generated almost eight pounds per day.

On the positive side:

Bay Area residents' use of public transit is up in recent years.

Sustainability of Human Progress: "PROGRESS AND ITS SUSTAINABILITY"

About.com: http://www.hhinst.com/

About.com: http://www.hhinst.com/ A list of books about healthy Building Materials and indoor air pollution. design element learned: With Clean non polluting building materials 1500 cfm / occupant will keep BO in check but a air movement rate of 2500 cfm / occupant 24 hr / day is a better goal. The author speaks about the importance of building tight..... Wood frame and drywall is very difficult to make air tight... Adobe (or fidobe) over chicken wire and steel rebar is air tight and pest resistent. Insulated with natural compressed straw, it is air tight and sound proof, low toxicity, termites have no interest, ants have to crawl around on the exterior but cannot crawl through.

My next interest/ project is in the natural ways to water proof certain sections of this fidobe structure, possibly by firing the building or a section of it to melt a ceramic glaze upon the surface. Reference: Khalili in Isreal - building a Kibutz out of clay... Currently building a city in Senegal out of clay, sand bags and wire.

Homeless, Senegal, Emergency Shelter, Refugee, Shelters, Disaster resistance, Hurricane, Fire, Flood, Earthquake, Emergency Kit

Homeless, Senegal, Emergency Shelter, Refugee, Shelters, Disaster resistance, Hurricane, Fire, Flood, Earthquake, Emergency Kit: "Cal-Earth" --- Architecture from Clay by Nader Khalili. Currently Khalili is seeking funding to build a village or around 20,000 homes for 1/2 the cost of other materials. "People in Senegal could build their own homes with local labor and materials close at hand." Unfortunately, the project still needs around $50 million to finance water, sewage and road systems which represent the major cost of the project....

This is where my more compact vision of adobe use has it's advantages. By concentrating people a bit more we gain materials conservation, energy conservation through shared heat and cooling systems of primarily passive solar & a shared heat exchanger, moderate aggregation of water usage allowing more efficient water usage and justifying a building water well, biodigestible sewage concentration favoring onsite treatment of biodigestible waste with energy recapture in the form of methane pumped back to the kitchens for cooking and sterilized fertilizer for the indoor and outdoor gardens which also supply digestible material for the biodigestor. Then again it is possible that one of my buildings could cost quite abit... at 6 stories high, each adobe story being 25 feet high from floor to ceiling and build into towers that are about 250 feet across each way with integrated bathrooms & kitchens two of each for every compartment stacked on top of each other in an integrated unit.
